Automated Analysis of Chemotaxis Assays

Together with the Biopharmaceuticals Research Group at the University of Graz, Motive Engineering is developing advanced techniques to automatically analyse chemotaxis essays that are used to characterize the migration of leukocytes as a response to chemical stimuli. The core of the technology is based on the Motive Metrics ® engine, combined with state-of-the-art microscopy. A precise and extensive statistical analysis of the assays, that are performed with a multi-boyden-chamber setup, is essential for the generation of reliable research results.

Until the introduction of our technology this was a purely manual process, involving laboratory technicians to classify and count different types of cells on a large number of microscopy images. Taking a very sizeable portion out of the highly trained technician's valuable time to perform this task is a serious burden for any research group. Also, no matter the level of training and dedication, human performance fluctuates, which is likely to influence reported results. With the introduction of the Motive Metrics® technology we have already been able to show that automated analysis of chemotaxis assays can be done in a reliable and far less time-consuming manner than was previously the case. After full implementation and further testing at the Biopharmaceuticals Research Group in Graz, we plan to roll out the technology to many more laboratories across the world.
